Iana's Story

My name is Iana Avdieieva. I started a new life with my husband and our four kids after leaving Kherson on the first day of Russia's big invasion of Ukraine. We left a successful family business in shipbuilding and repair, and faced lots of unknowns because of the war. Now, Canada is our new home, and I’m thankful my family is safe here. My husband works as a pipe welder, and I handle a part-time job as a front desk clerk. The change is tough; moving from running a business to having jobs required us to change our mindset and learn new things in these different jobs. Our hardest challenge is learning English—our kids’ schooling is a bright spot, as they really throw themselves into their studies. This journey is driven by love and care for our family. We've been together for 23 years, and our kids are our biggest motivation. Despite the difficulties, we are hopeful, helped by the kindness and generous support of Canadians. With better English, I hope to grow my Ukrainian food business, with dreams of opening a gourmet and home-cooked food shop to give my family the future they deserve.
